Tunisia
The ancient name of the hosting country Tunisia is “Ifriqia” from which the continent Africa has derived its name. Tunisia is situated in the Heart of the Mediterranean, at the junction of sea basins where many peoples have been sailing from time immemorial.
Largely open to the Mediterranean in the north and the east, with a 1.300 km coastline, and confined by the Sahara in the south, the country enjoys a Mediterranean climate with a great deal of diversity: the Mediterranean climate in the north with an arid tendency to the south where it becomes a Sahara type. Hence, the highly contrasted landscape: forests in the north, steppes in the center, and desert and oases in the south.
The privileged location of Tunisia has always attracted in a strong manner those who cruised in front of its coast. Many peoples cohabited with the indigenous Berbers: Phoenicians, Romans, Vandals, Byzantines, Arabs, Turks, Europeans …
The Tunisian civilization emanates from merging many kinds of heritage, a successful synthesis of very different contributions.

Tunisia belongs to the Arab-Islamic area, but remains open to the other, a land of generous hospitality.
It is a country where the security of persons and goods is ensured, where serenity and happiness prevail.
A large number of well-known mathematicians, some now deceased, who settled in other continents, were born in Tunisia.
Passport and Visas
Valid passports and entry visas are required to visit Tunisia. Visa may not be required for visitors from certain countries, and congress participants are advised to consult the nearest Tunisian Diplomatic Mission for details. Once in Tunisia the congress participants are always advised to carry their passports with them because the passports may be needed to check into hotels, book airlines tickets, and change money. The congress secretariat will send a formal invitation on request with which the congress participants can apply for a visa at the Tunisian Diplomatic Mission. This application should be made preferably sufficiently early (at least three months) before departure for Tunisia to allow time for processing.
Alternatively, congress participants may ask their travel agents to arrange their travel to Tunisia and obtain a tourist visa inspective of whether they have registered with congress secretariat.
Arrival in Tunis
Tunis is mainly accessible by air or sea through many Mediterranean ports. The congress organizers will meet you at Tunis-Carthage airport unless you have asked otherwise. It is also possible for participants to arrive at Habib Bourguiba Airport in Monastir, from where Tunis can be reached by train or by road.

Official Languages
The official language in Tunisia is Arabic, but the spoken languages are Tunisian dialect, French and English. From the 2rd form on, Tunisian children learn the French language compulsory, so each Tunisian will, at least in theory, speak also French, and almost all official documents, signs, etc., are written in French, in addition to Arabic as well. Most people working in hotels and tourism industry speak English.

Weather
The Mediterranean climate in Tunis means that there is pleasant weather all year round, and temperatures in March are warm yet mild. This is a perfect time of year to visit to escape to cold and dampness of other parts of Europe. The average temperature on any given day lingers around 14 degrees Celsius. The temperature can dip as low as 9 degrees Celsius or swing as high as 18 degrees. Regardless of the temperature, tourists can expect to enjoy around nine hours of sunshine while in Tunis. This will give you ample time to explore the region.
The electric current
The AC power is 220V. Please note that adapters may be necessary.
Bank Services
TD (Tunisian Dinar) is the only currency used in Tunisia. Money exchanges by cash or traveller’s cheques can be made at the Banks in Tunis, International Airports, and Hotels.
Credit Cards
Credit cards such as Visa or Master Card are acceptable for payment at hotels or tourist stores…
First aid, Health and Accident Insurances
The congress fee does not include insurance for the participants against accidents, sickness, or loss of personal property. All participants are strongly advised to make necessary arrangements for short term health and accident insurance in advance. In any case, the organizers refuse all liability to cover health or accident expenses of participants.
